Calvin Smith, a former Police Officer, joined the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) in 1984, and served with the BPS for over 37 years. His career saw him achieve the rank of Chief Inspector and included post as Head of the Serious Crime Unit, Head of Special Branch, Government Security Officer, Fire Investigator and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) Officer. Upon his retirement from the service in August 2016, he was immediately recalled and served as the Staff Officer to the Commissioner of Police until May 2021.

During his time as a police officer, Calvin was most valued and respected for his contribution and work in the Serious Crime and Intelligence Divisions. He was integral in combating the unprecedented increase in gun crime and gang violence and was also vital in implementing the Justice Protection Programme (witness protection) and took the lead on executing preliminary risk and threat analysis and was relied heavily on for his professionalism and proficiency in that regard.

He is the President of the Bermuda Police Service Ex Police Officers Association and was widely considered to be one of the most knowledgeable and accomplished officers in the BPS. His leadership style has made a significant difference to the BPS and his professional manner and excellent skill sets helped to navigate through the challenging and demanding period brought on by the increase of violent offences and consequential legislative change. His performance earned him an award from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, BPS Officer of the Year on two occasions, as well as several Commissioner’s Commendations, Merit Awards and numerous other accolades during his exemplary career. In June 2016, in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List he was awarded an Overseas Territories Medal (OTM) for his Meritorious Service to policing. He is presently the Compliance Team Lead for the Government of Bermuda, Ministry of Health.

Calvin has a long track record of high performance, achieving results, and making significant contributions to improvements to policing operations. He has the support of his family, his significant other Lisa, their two children and three grandchildren.
